The India Meteorological Department on October 22, issued fresh update on the storm Tej that has moved into an extremely severe cyclonic storm category.
Extremely severe cyclonic storm Tej over westcentral and adjoining southwest Arabian Sea is likely to move northwestwards and cross Yemen-Oman coasts between Al Ghaidah (Yemen) and Salalah (Oman), close to east of Al Ghaidah (Yemen) around noon of October 24 as a very severe cyclonic storm.
The Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Tej over westcentral and adjoining southwest Arabian sea intensified into an Extremely severe cyclonic storm, moved northwesrwards with a speed of 16kmph during past 6 hours, and lay centered at 0830 hours IST on October 22 over the same region.
“The very severe cyclonic storm ‘Tej’ intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm and lay centred about 160 km east-southeast of Socotra (Yemen), 540 km south-southeast of Salalah (Oman), and 550 km southeast of Al Ghaidah (Yemen) at 8:30 am on Sunday,” the IMD said in a statement.
Southwest Arabian Sea: According to the IMD, phenomenal sea condition is prevailing over the region and will continue till October 23. It is likely to improve gradually becoming high to very rough from October 24 morning and continue till evening. Thereafter, it will improve gradually.
Meanwhile, IMD also informed of a Depression forming over westcentral Bay of Bengal that is likely to move northwestwards during next 12 hours. It will then recurve and move north-northeastwards during subsequent 3 days towards Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts.
Dr Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General, IMD, said that a depression has formed in the Bay of Bengal. The depression will intensify into a deep depression and by October 23, it may intensify further and become a cyclone storm between October 23 to 25.
Further, Coastal Odisha and West Bengal are expected receive light to moderate rainfall. Meanwhile, according to Dr. Mohapatra, the sea condition is very rough and is not safe for the fishermen and ships. He also advised fishermen to go to sea and be aware of the issued warnings.
