Boxing legend Mary Kom refutes retirement rumors

Indian legendary boxer M C Mary Kom on Thursday refuted reports that she has announced retirement.

In a statement, the boxer clarified, “Dear friends from the media, I haven’t announced my retirement yet and have been misquoted. I will personally address the media when I decide to make such an announcement.”

The rumors of the 41-year-old champion’s retirement circulated after she mentioned at a school event in Dibrugarh on Wednesday that the Olympic age limit prevents her from participating.

Mary Kom set the record straight, stating, “I have gone through some media reports stating that I have announced retirement, and this is not true. I was attending a school event in Dibrugarh on January 24, 2024, where I was motivating children.”

While expressing her ongoing commitment to the sport, she acknowledged the Olympic age restriction but emphasized, “I still have a hunger to achieve in sports but the age limit in the Olympics doesn’t allow me to participate, though I can continue with my sport. I am still focusing on my fitness, and whenever I decide to retire, I will inform everyone.”

Mary Kom, the first female boxer in history to secure six world titles, remains an iconic figure in Indian boxing, having claimed a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games and a bronze at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
