Eminent jurist Fali S Nariman dies at 95, PM Modi pays tribute

Renowned jurist and senior advocate Fali S. Nariman passed away on Wednesday at the age of 95 after battling multiple ailments, including cardiac issues.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences in a post on X, praising Nariman’s exceptional legal acumen. “Shri Fali Nariman Ji was among the most outstanding legal minds and intellectuals. He devoted his life to making justice accessible to common citizens. I am pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.

Born on January 10, 1929, in Myanmar to a Parsi family, Nariman began his legal career at the Bombay High Court in 1950. His illustrious journey included serving as the Additional Solicitor General of India from 1972 to 1975, marked by his principled resignation during the Emergency. Recognized for his legal prowess, Nariman was appointed as a senior advocate by the Supreme Court of India in 1971. Furthermore, he served as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from 1999 to 2005.

Throughout his distinguished legal career, Nariman argued in several significant cases that left an indelible mark on Indian legal history. His contributions were honored with the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2007, accolades that underscored his invaluable service to the nation.
