India on Tuesday reiterated its desire for a positive, constructive and forward-looking relationship with Bangladesh, saying it remains ready to address all bilateral issues through existing structured mechanisms.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India has consistently maintained its position on strengthening ties with Bangladesh while addressing bilateral matters through established channels.
He made the remarks during a bi-weekly media briefing in New Delhi.
On whether External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar would meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and other members of the Bangladesh delegation on the sidelines of the ongoing UN General Assembly session in New York, Jaiswal said he had no information on any such meeting at present.
Jaishankar is leading the Indian delegation during the High-Level Week of the 81st UN General Assembly session and is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 26. He is also expected to hold several bilateral and plurilateral meetings during the visit.
Meanwhile, India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, has held a series of meetings with Bangladeshi leaders this month.
Last week, Trivedi met Mahdi Amin, Advisor to the Bangladesh Prime Minister, to discuss cooperation in education, technology and innovation.
The Indian High Commission said the meeting highlighted the enduring bonds between India and Bangladesh, rooted in strong people-to-people ties.
Trivedi also held discussions with Bangladesh Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism Rashiduzzaman Millat on improving air connectivity and air cargo capacity. He also met Water Resources Minister Shafiquddin Chowdhury Anee and Zahed Ur Rahman, Advisor for Policy and Strategy to the Bangladesh Prime Minister.
The High Commission said both sides expressed optimism that India and Bangladesh would continue working together to strengthen people-to-people relations.
