The 5th edition of the joint military exercise between India and Japan kicked off on Sunday in Rajasthan. The exercise, named ‘Dharma Guardian’, is being conducted at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges in Bikaner from Feb 25 to March 9.
The yearly event, rotating between India and Japan, seeks to enhance military collaboration and reinforce the capacity to operate jointly in semi-urban regions. Each contingent consists of 40 soldiers, comprising Japan’s 34th Infantry Regiment and India’s Rajputana Rifles battalion.
The exercise focuses on physical fitness, joint planning, tactical drills, and special weapons skills. It covers different scenarios, like setting up temporary bases, conducting search operations in villages, and practicing helicopter operations and house interventions.
A notable feature of this year’s exercise is a display of weapons and equipment, highlighting India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative and its growing defence production capabilities.
The exercise helps both countries learn from each other’s tactics and procedures. It also builds teamwork and understanding between soldiers from India and Japan, strengthening their defence cooperation and friendship.
As part of the exercise, Lieutenant General Togashi Yuichi, Commanding General of the Japan Ground Self Defence Force’s Eastern Army, is scheduled to visit India on March 3. During his visit, he will observe combat shooting, special helicopter operations, and house intervention drills at the Mahajan Field Firing Ranges.
