President Murmu to confer inaugural Pey Jal Survekshan Awards on March 5

President Droupadi Murmu will present the inaugural Pey Jal Survekshan Awards on March 5, as announced by the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs. The awards recognize outstanding performance in the water sector by cities and states across the country.

A total of 130 awards will be distributed across various categories, including Best Water Body, Sustainability Champion, Reuse Champion, Water Quality, City Saturation, and the prestigious AMRUT 2.0 Rotating Trophy of the Year. The assessment, conducted under AMRUT 2.0 in 485 cities, evaluated several parameters such as access, coverage, water quality in treatment plants and households, and sustainability of water bodies’ health, including the availability of SCADA/flowmeters and reuse of treated water.

Launched in 2015, the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) aims to enhance the quality of life for all citizens, particularly the underprivileged, by ensuring access to fundamental civic amenities such as water supply, sewerage, urban transport, and parks.

The event will also witness the launch of the AMRUT Mitra initiative, connecting women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) from different parts of the country. The initiative aims to empower women by involving them in urban water management activities, recognizing their pivotal role in household water management.

The Mitras will play a crucial role in implementing AMRUT 2.0 projects, focusing on tasks like billing, collection, leak detection, plumbing works, water quality sampling, and infrastructure maintenance. Through the AMRUT Mitra initiative, efforts are made to promote inclusivity and diversity in traditionally male-dominated sectors, empowering women and ensuring access to safe drinking water for households while addressing gender disparities.

The initiative is expected to uplift the socio-economic status of women SHGs, aligning with the objectives of AMRUT 2.0, fostering community awareness, and serving as a blueprint for future endeavors.
