The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Odisha due to severe heatwave conditions expected over the next 2-3 days. Additionally, Telangana, Jharkhand, Interior Karnataka, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh are under an orange alert for 4-5 days.
Eastern India will bear the brunt of the heatwaves, while Southern India will experience slightly less severe conditions. Odisha and Ganges West Bengal have been facing continuous heatwaves since mid-April. Rayalaseema in Andhra Pradesh and parts of Kerala are also affected.
In Kalaykunda, West Bengal, the temperature soared to 47.2°C, prompting extreme heatwave conditions for the next two days in West Bengal, Gujarat, Bihar, and Odisha. Jharkhand, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh will continue to experience heatwaves for the next 5 days. Warm nights are expected in several states for 3-4 days.
Most areas in Eastern and Southern states will face heatwaves in May, with temperatures exceeding 40°C for 2-3 days every week. Relief from severe heat is anticipated in certain Northern states after May 2, with possible light rain and strong winds. Uttarakhand and parts of Northeastern states may also see light rainfall.
