Young Indian shuttler Priyanshu Rajawat advanced to the quarterfinals of the ongoing Canada Open badminton tournament on Friday.
In the pre-quarterfinals, he defeated Japan’s Takuma Obayashi, ranked 33rd in the world, in straight sets of 21-19, 21-11. The match lasted 38 minutes.
Next up for Priyanshu in the quarterfinals is Anders Antonsen, the top-seeded player and currently ranked fourth in the world.
In women’s doubles, the Indian pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also advanced to the quarterfinals. They won their pre-quarterfinal match against Natasja P Anthonisen of Denmark and Alyssa Tirtosentono of the Netherlands with scores of 21-13, 21-14. Treesa and Gayatri will face the Chinese Taipei duo of Hsieh Pei Shan and Hung En-Tzu in the next round.
However, it wasn’t as successful for India in the women’s singles category. Anupama Upadhyaya and Tanya Hemanth faced defeats in their pre-quarterfinal matches. Anupama lost a close battle against Canada’s Michelle Li, with scores of 14-21, 21-17, 13-21. Meanwhile, Tanya fell to Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan in straight sets of 21-11, 21-13 in the second round.
The Canada Open kicked off in Calgary from July 2 and will continue till July 7.
