IndiGo launches business class service for first time in 18 years

IndiGo, India’s leading low-cost carrier, has announced a significant expansion of its services on its 18th anniversary. For the first time since its inception, the airline will introduce business class seats, marking a notable shift from its traditional no-frills model.

CEO Pieter Elbers revealed that starting tomorrow, passengers traveling between metro cities will have the option to book business class seats on IndiGo flights.

CEO Elbers said, “Starting tomorrow, passengers travelling between metro cities will have the option to book business class seats on IndiGo flights.”

While bookings open immediately, the new premium service will be available for travel beginning November this year.

This strategic move represents a major departure for IndiGo, which has built its reputation on providing affordable, economy-class services. The introduction of a business class option is expected to attract a new segment of travelers seeking additional comfort and convenience on domestic routes.

In addition to the business class announcement, IndiGo also unveiled plans for wide-body aircraft operations. The airline aims to launch services using Airbus A350-900 planes by 2027, further expanding its capabilities and route options.

Currently operating over 400 routes, including 34 international destinations, IndiGo is set for further expansion. Elbers shared plans to launch seven new international routes in the near future, reinforcing the airline’s growing global presence.

This strategic move to introduce business class and expand its international network signals IndiGo’s ambition to cater to a broader range of travellers while enhancing its competitive edge in the aviation industry.
