Mexicans gathered on Saturday (September 21) to celebrate one of their most iconic cultural expressions with a mariachi marathon in downtown Mexico City.
From 2 p.m. until midnight local time, over 20 bands and singers, wearing wide-brimmed sombreros and embroidered outfits, are scheduled to take the stage at the Zócalo square, next to the presidential palace.
Mariachi lovers sang along with the artists to some of the most renowned songs of the music genre, carrying umbrellas to protect themselves from the sun.
In 2011, UNESCO added mariachi music to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Mariachi music consists of bands with violins, vihuelas, trumpets, and guitarrons, with performers wearing charro-inspired traditional costumes, playing a wide range of songs from different Mexican regions.
