Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the recent India-China border disengagement as a “major achievement” after years of diplomatic and military efforts. Addressing soldiers at Meghna Stadium in Tezpur, Assam, Singh emphasized that the success was made possible by the dedication and bravery of India’s armed forces.
Singh, who is celebrating Diwali with troops in Tezpur, shared meals and lit diyas with the soldiers. Reflecting on the breakthrough, he said, “This is not a small development. After prolonged efforts, we have reached a consensus with China. The credit goes to your courage and valor, which facilitated the mutual dialogue.”
The Defence Minister reiterated India’s commitment to maintaining good relations with its neighbors while stressing that the country remains vigilant in defending its borders. “India seeks peace, but when necessary, we will act to protect our sovereignty,” he added.
According to Indian Army sources, the disengagement process in the contentious areas of Depsang and Demchok in eastern Ladakh has been completed, marking an important step toward restoring the situation to pre-April 2020 conditions. This disengagement follows the recent announcement of an agreement between India and China on patrolling arrangements along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, bringing an end to the four-year military standoff.
The border conflict, which began in 2020 due to Chinese military incursions, strained bilateral ties for years. Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed the matter during their meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, welcoming the agreement to ease tensions along the LAC.
Singh was scheduled to visit Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, but inclement weather diverted his visit to Assam. “I feel fortunate to celebrate Diwali with you all here,” Singh said. “Though my original plans were to be in Tawang, perhaps destiny wanted me to be here with you.”
The Defence Minister also highlighted Prime Minister Modi’s tradition of celebrating Diwali with troops stationed in forward areas. This year, senior defence leaders are following suit, spending the festival with armed forces personnel at various locations across the country.
Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan is with troops in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Command, while Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi is celebrating with naval personnel in Porbandar, Gujarat—a region that witnesses frequent smuggling and security threats. Meanwhile, Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh is with troops in the Jammu and Kashmir sector to mark the festival.
Singh concluded by expressing gratitude for the armed forces’ dedication. “Celebrating Diwali with my larger family—the armed forces—gives me immense joy,” he added, reflecting on the significance of the moment.
