Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday unveiled the LIC Bima Sakhi Yojana, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at empowering women through financial literacy and opportunities in the insurance sector.
The scheme, launched by the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), targets women aged 18-70 years with a minimum educational qualification of Class X. As part of the initiative, participants will receive specialized training along with a stipend for the first three years to enhance financial awareness and promote insurance literacy.
After completing the training, women can work as LIC agents. Outstanding performers among the Bima Sakhis may also qualify for consideration as Development Officers in LIC.
At the event, PM Modi ceremonially distributed appointment certificates to prospective Bima Sakhis.
Highlighting the significance of the scheme, the Prime Minister said, “I congratulate all the sisters of the country. A few years ago, I had the privilege of starting the ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ campaign from Panipat, which brought positive changes nationwide. Now, after 10 years, the ‘Bima Sakhi Yojana’ has been launched for sisters and daughters from this historic land. Panipat has become a symbol of women’s power.”
The scheme also aligns with India’s ‘Insurance for All’ mission, a target set to achieve insurance saturation by 2047 under the guidance of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDAI).
PM Modi emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for women and removing barriers to their progress. He praised the efforts of women involved in self-help groups across the country.
As part of the event, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for the Main Campus of Maharana Pratap Horticultural University in Karnal. Spread across 495 acres, the campus and six regional research stations will be built at a cost of over ₹700 crore.
The university will feature a College of Horticulture for undergraduate and postgraduate studies and five schools dedicated to 10 horticulture disciplines. Its focus will be on crop diversification and world-class research to develop advanced horticultural technologies.
