As the Delhi assembly elections draw near, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched a sharp attack on Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, criticizing him for constructing a lavish residence during his tenure.
Addressing a public rally at Ramlila Ground in Ashok Vihar, PM Modi said, “I could have also built a palace for myself (‘Mai bhi koi sheeshmahal bana sakta tha’), but I chose to build homes for the poor instead.”
Highlighting his government’s housing initiatives, the Prime Minister added, “The nation knows that Modi never built a home for himself, but under our administration, over 4 crore houses have been constructed for the poor.” He urged citizens to convey his message to slum dwellers, promising them permanent homes under the BJP-led central government’s initiative to replace slums with durable housing.
PM Modi underscored the critical role of urban development in India’s journey toward becoming a developed nation, saying, “Cities are the backbone of India’s progress. Millions migrate here with dreams and work hard to fulfill them. Our government is committed to improving the quality of life for every urban family.”
He further emphasized that 2025 would mark a significant milestone in India’s global stature, positioning the nation as a hub for manufacturing and economic stability. “India has become a symbol of political and economic resilience. By 2025, we aim to solidify India’s standing in the world and transform it into a premier manufacturing center,” he said.
During his address, the Prime Minister became emotional, reminiscing about his time in Ashok Vihar during the fight against Indira Gandhi’s regime. “This place brings back memories of the underground movement against Indira Gandhi’s dictatorship. Ashok Vihar was a refuge for many of us,” he shared.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi inaugurated 1,675 newly constructed flats at Swabhiman Apartments in Ashok Vihar as part of the In-Situ Slum Rehabilitation Project. During the event, he handed over keys to beneficiaries, many of whom expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts. In a social media post, he reaffirmed his commitment to providing proper housing for all, adding, “A home is where dreams take root. These newly constructed flats will ensure better and healthier living for many families.”
In addition to the inauguration, PM Modi virtually launched several urban redevelopment projects, including the World Trade Centre at Nauroji Nagar, GPRA Type-II Quarters at Sarojini Nagar, and CBSE’s Integrated Office Complex at Dwarka. He also laid the foundation stone for Veer Savarkar College in Roshanpura, Najafgarh.
