Gaza Ceasefire

India welcomes ceasefire and hostage release agreement in Gaza

India on Thursday expressed its support for the recently announced ceasefire and hostage release agreement between Israel and Hamas, with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasizing the hope that the deal would facilitate the safe and sustained delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

“We welcome the announcement of the agreement for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza. We hope this will lead to a safe and sustained supply of humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza,” the MEA said in a statement.

The ministry reiterated India’s long-standing position, calling for the release of all hostages, a ceasefire, and a return to diplomacy and dialogue. “We have consistently called for the release of all hostages, ceasefire, and return to a path of dialogue and diplomacy,” the statement added.

Earlier in the day, U.S. President Joe Biden announced the successful negotiation of the ceasefire and hostage deal, marking a significant step after more than 15 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas. The agreement, structured in three phases, includes a complete ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the release of hostages, including Americans, in the first phase.

Following the announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held discussions with both U.S. President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump regarding the agreement. The deal is expected to be a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict, offering a glimmer of hope for lasting peace and stability in the region.
