Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hailed the visit of the European Commission President and the College of Commissioners to India as “unprecedented” and a key moment in the two-decade-long India-EU strategic partnership.
In his joint press statement following his meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at Hyderabad House on Friday, the Prime Minister said, “This isn’t just the European Commission’s first visit to India, but also the first such comprehensive engagement of the European Commission in any single country. Also, this is one of the first visits of the new Commission in its latest term.”
The visit saw extensive discussions between the two sides, with nearly 20 ministerial-level meetings held across different sectors. PM Modi emphasized that the India-EU partnership is “natural and organic,” built on trust, shared democratic values, and a mutual commitment to prosperity.
India and the EU have outlined a roadmap for collaboration in trade, technology, investment, and innovation. The two sides have directed their teams to finalize a mutually beneficial Bilateral Free Trade Agreement (FTA) by the end of this year.
“To strengthen the investment framework, there has also been talk of moving forward on an Investment Protection and GI Agreement,” PM Modi said.
Technology cooperation emerged as a key focus, with agreements to enhance collaboration in semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing, and 6G. Additionally, both sides have decided to initiate a dedicated Space Dialogue.
Green Growth and Sustainability Initiatives
India and the EU announced plans for a Green Hydrogen Forum and an Offshore Wind Energy Business Summit. Joint research initiatives will be undertaken on electric vehicle (EV) batteries, marine plastics, and green hydrogen.
“Our cooperation in sustainable urban development will also be taken forward under a Joint Plan,” PM Modi said.
Advancing Connectivity and Security Cooperation
In a major step toward boosting global trade routes, India and the EU have agreed to take concrete measures to advance the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).
“I firmly believe that IMEEC shall serve as an engine that drives global commerce, sustainable growth, and prosperity in the days to come,” the Prime Minister added.
On security, both sides reinforced their cooperation in cyber security, maritime security, and counter-terrorism. India welcomed the EU’s decision to join the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.
“We will work together on Triangular Development projects for sustainable and inclusive development in the Indo-Pacific region and Africa,” PM Modi added.
People-to-People Ties and Future Roadmap
Highlighting the importance of people-to-people exchanges, India and the EU reached an agreement to strengthen partnerships in academia, research, and industry. PM Modi expressed optimism about the synergy between India’s young talent and Europe’s innovation, stating that it could create “limitless possibilities.”
The Prime Minister also welcomed the EU’s new visa cascade regime, which will facilitate better mobility for skilled Indian professionals.
India and the EU also decided to create a “bold and ambitious” roadmap for their partnership beyond 2025, which will be launched at the next India-EU Summit.
