The Gandoh Bhalesa Mountain in Doda has transformed into a winter wonderland after fresh snowfall blanketed the lush green terrain, offering a mesmerizing white landscape. The snow-clad Himalayan peaks and serene surroundings continue to attract tourists seeking a magical winter experience.
Meanwhile, Srinagar’s iconic Dal Lake is witnessing a surge in tourist footfall, with travelers from across the country and beyond flocking to experience its enchanting beauty. Shikara rides remain a favorite, allowing visitors to explore the lake’s inner parts while taking in the breathtaking scenery.
The rise in tourism has provided a boost to local businesses, benefiting houseboat owners, shikara operators, and handicraft sellers. The cozy houseboats, renowned for their intricate woodwork and charming interiors, offer visitors a unique and memorable stay. Shikara operators guide tourists through the picturesque waters, while local artisans showcase traditional Kashmiri handicrafts, with beautifully crafted souvenirs becoming popular among visitors.
However, the increase in tourism also brings challenges, emphasizing the need for sustainable tourism practices to preserve Dal Lake’s delicate ecosystem. Initiatives to reduce plastic waste and promote eco-friendly shikara rides are essential to maintaining the lake’s pristine beauty for future generations.
Sharing his experience, Rahul Gupta, a tourist from Lucknow, said, “This is a beautiful place, truly the paradise of Kashmir. Everyone should visit. The people are helpful, the environment is pollution-free, and the facilities are excellent. My houseboat experience was great. It’s a must-visit, especially in winter.”
Another tourist, Urvashi, said, “We arrived yesterday and explored the market, taking a shikara ride to Zero Point and Lal Chowk. The market is wonderful, people are friendly, and it’s peaceful and pollution-free. It’s enjoyable even in the cold winter.”
Local resident Ghulam Rasool added, “It’s winter season now, and the cold weather is attracting tourists. The climate is perfect, and Kashmir’s beauty is at its peak.”
In the Jammu region, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is conducting snow clearance operations on the Budhal-Mahore-Gool Road, ensuring connectivity between the districts of Rajouri, Mahore, and Ramban despite the harsh weather conditions.
As tourism flourishes, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi noted the region’s improved security situation. “In the hinterland, the Counter Terrorism grid has been reinvigorated, and all government agencies have taken steps in a synergized manner for the upliftment of the local populace, which has resulted in the region shifting from ‘Terrorism to Tourism,’” he said.
With enhanced security and infrastructural development, Jammu and Kashmir is experiencing a resurgence in economic activity, driven by the thriving tourism sector.
