For the 12th consecutive day on Tuesday, the Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked small arms firing on Indian positions along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.
A spokesperson for the Defence Ministry said, “During the night of May 5–6, 2025, the Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked small-arms firing from posts across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor.
“The Indian Army responded in a proportionate manner,” the spokesperson added.
Tensions between the two countries have escalated sharply following the killing of 26 civilians — including 25 tourists and a local — by Pakistan-backed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists on April 22 in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam.
The country was outraged by the brutal terrorist attack. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his first response to the incident, stated that the terrorists, along with their handlers and backers, would be chased and hunted down to the ends of the earth.
In response, India announced a series of strong measures against Pakistan. These include the deportation of Pakistani nationals from Indian territory, closure of the Attari-Wagah border crossing, suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, closure of Indian airspace to Pakistani commercial flights, and cancellation of all trade and cultural exchanges between the two nations.
On Monday, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs directed all border states to conduct a mock civil defence drill on Wednesday to familiarize students and citizens with emergency procedures in case of war-like situations.
PM Modi has granted operational freedom to the armed forces to avenge the Pahalgam killings. This decision followed a series of high-level meetings involving the defence minister, national security advisor, chief of defence staff (CDS), and the chiefs of the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has also been conducting regular security review meetings. He has instructed the Army to use all necessary force to eliminate those responsible for the Pahalgam attack.
As part of a strong crackdown, security forces demolished the homes of ten terrorists to send a clear message to militants, their overground workers (OGWs), and sympathisers.
On April 25, two houses belonging to Adil Hussain Thokar and Asif Sheikh — both LeT terrorists involved in the Pahalgam killings — were demolished in the Tral and Bijbehara areas.
On April 28, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly unanimously condemned the heinous terror attack and adopted a resolution against it.
