India achieved a historic milestone in its semiconductor journey as the first set of Made-in-India chips from a pilot production line was presented to Prime Minister Narendra Modi by Union Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, Ashwini Vaishnaw. The presentation took place during SEMICON India 2025, highlighting the country’s rapid transition from approvals to production in just three and a half years.
Addressing the event, Union Minister Vaishnaw termed the moment a source of national pride and thanked the Prime Minister for his visionary leadership, strong will, and decisive action. “From 7.8% GDP growth to a growing semiconductor ecosystem with the first Made-in-India chips, Bharat stands as a lighthouse of stability,” he said.
Vaishnaw emphasized that India’s semiconductor mission is built on trust, respect for intellectual property, supply chain development, and co-development models with global partners. “India has always gone to the world as a partner, fostering mutual growth and win-win collaborations,” he added.
At SEMICON India 2025, 12 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were announced to strengthen indigenous capabilities in semiconductor design, manufacturing, and talent development. Key initiatives include the development of IoT chipsets, automotive camera modules, MEMS microphones, miniature packaging, and secure chips embedded with smart operating systems.
The Union Minister also unveiled the Deep Tech Alliance, backed by a $1 billion commitment to support semiconductors and other frontier sectors, including clean energy, quantum technologies, and biotechnology. He highlighted that India’s semiconductor production is already 15–30% more cost-competitive compared to global benchmarks.
ISM 2.0 was announced to expand support across fabs, OSAT units, capital equipment, and materials, building on the success of ISM 1.0. India is also nurturing a deep talent pool, with 78 universities utilizing advanced EDA tools and more than 28 startups advancing from project to product.
During the event, 20 chips designed and manufactured by Indian students at the Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL) were presented to the Prime Minister, demonstrating India’s focus on innovation and skill development.
Vaishnaw further noted that India’s semiconductor mission aligns with global export goals and positions the country as a future hub for semiconductor manufacturing, delivering on Prime Minister Modi’s vision of making India a global leader in the semiconductor and electronics industry.
