UAE: Indian Expats to Receive Chip-Enabled E-Passports

The Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi has announced the launch of an upgraded passport system that will issue e-passports with embedded chips to all Indian nationals in the UAE beginning October 28, 2025. The new Passport Seva Programme, designated as GPSP 2.0, represents a major technological advancement in passport services for the Indian expatriate community.

Starting October 28, all passport applicants must use the newly launched online portal at mportal.passportindia.gov.in/gpsp/AuthNavigation/Login to access passport services. The mandatory transition to the new system applies to all Indian expats seeking passport-related services in the UAE.

The centerpiece of this upgrade is the introduction of e-passports featuring embedded microchips that store digitized passport holder information. These chip-enabled passports are designed to enable faster and smoother clearance at immigration checkpoints worldwide, bringing Indian travel documents in line with international biometric passport standards.

The GPSP 2.0 portal introduces several convenience features aimed at streamlining the application process. Applicants now have the option to upload ICAO-compliant photographs, signatures, and supporting documents directly through the online portal before their appointment. Embassy officials are actively encouraging applicants to utilize this pre-upload feature, noting it can substantially reduce waiting times at physical service centers. Detailed guidelines for preparing ICAO-compliant photographs are available on the Embassy’s website.

Another significant improvement addresses a frequent source of frustration for applicants. Under the previous system, any errors in applications often required complete resubmission. The new platform allows BLS service providers to make minor corrections to already submitted applications on their end, eliminating the need for applicants to retype entire forms. This correction service is provided at no additional charge.

The upgrade affects the entire Indian expatriate community in the UAE seeking new passports, renewals, or other passport-related services.
