Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah on Tuesday congratulated Amul and the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO) for securing the first and second ranks among the world’s top ten cooperatives in the ICA World Cooperative Monitor 2025.
In a post on X, Shah said, “A proud moment for Bharat! Heartiest congratulations to Amul and IFFCO for occupying the first two ranks among the top ten cooperatives in the world.”
He added, “It is an honour to the tireless dedication of millions of women associated with Amul and the farmers contributing to IFFCO. This achievement is a testament to the boundless potential of India’s cooperative sector, which is being transformed into a global model of empowerment and self-reliance under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
The Ministry of Cooperation, in a statement, described it as a “landmark achievement” for India’s cooperative movement.
“Two of India’s leading cooperatives, Amul and IFFCO, have secured the first and second ranks globally. This is a strong endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi,’ which has revitalized the cooperative sector and given new impetus to India’s economy,” the Ministry said in a post on X.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel also lauded the achievement, posting,
“Heartiest congratulations to Amul on being crowned the World’s No. 1 Cooperative. With relentless dedication to quality and innovation, Amul has emerged as one of India’s most trusted brands, empowering millions of dairy farmers, giving financial independence to women, and transforming countless rural lives. A moment of immense pride for Gujarat and India.”
According to the ICA World Cooperative Monitor 2025, released at the ICA CM50 Conference in Doha, Qatar, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) – which markets products under the Amul brand – was ranked No. 1 globally based on GDP per capita performance.
GCMMF, India’s largest food product marketing organization, recorded an annual turnover of USD 7.3 billion (₹60,000 crore) in 2023–24. It procures around 35 million litres of milk daily from 18,600 village milk cooperatives, encompassing 18 member unions, 33 districts, and over 3.6 million milk producers.
IFFCO, headquartered in New Delhi and founded in 1967, secured the second rank globally. One of the world’s largest cooperative fertiliser producers, IFFCO works through a network of 35,000 member cooperatives, reaching over 50 million Indian farmers.
The recognition of Amul and IFFCO underscores the resurgence of India’s cooperative model – a people-centric economic framework empowering rural communities, particularly women and small farmers.
