Hindi is not merely a language but an expression of national unity, says Dr Jitendra Singh

A meeting of the Hindi Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Earth Sciences was held on Wednesday at Prithvi Bhavan in New Delhi under the chairmanship of Union Minister Jitendra Singh.

The meeting focused on promoting wider dissemination of scientific knowledge in Hindi, enhancing public participation, and strengthening the spirit of national integration.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Jitendra Singh said that Hindi is not merely a language but a powerful medium of national unity and inclusive communication. He said the functioning of the Hindi Advisory Committee in the Ministry of Earth Sciences reflects India’s multilingual ethos and the vision of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”.

The Minister noted that Hindi implementation in the Ministry has received renewed momentum under the leadership of officers associated with Tamil Nadu, describing it as a positive example of national integration in administrative functioning.

He said that after nearly two decades, a favourable convergence has emerged in which officers linked with Tamil Nadu have played a key role in systematically advancing Hindi-related work in the Ministry.

Emphasising the importance of taking science to the common people, Dr Jitendra Singh underlined that the language of communication should be simple, accessible and precise. He clarified that while promoting Hindi, the originality and integrity of scientific terminology would be maintained to ensure that students and researchers are not placed at any disadvantage.

The Minister said subject-matter experts are now being involved alongside linguists in translation work to ensure quality and accuracy of scientific content.

Referring to the contribution of Indian scientists, Dr Jitendra Singh said there is a need to give greater visibility to 21st-century Indian scientists who have strengthened India’s global scientific standing. He added that the Ministry is considering the creation of a digital repository on modern Indian scientists for research, policymaking and public outreach.

Responding to suggestions from committee members, the Minister said digital platforms could be effectively used to organise national-level quiz competitions and challenge-based outreach programmes to promote scientific temper among students. He cited initiatives such as the Deep Ocean Mission as suitable themes for student-centric engagement.

Dr Jitendra Singh also observed that the expansion of Hindi in recent years has been organic and demand-driven. He noted that corporate and multinational companies are increasingly valuing Hindi proficiency, including in states such as Tamil Nadu and in the North-Eastern region, indicating that Hindi is also emerging as a language of employment and opportunity.

Highlighting the growing role of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the Minister said that by 2025 the Ministry has become a key pillar in India’s development journey. He referred to initiatives related to ocean research, coastal studies, seismology and meteorology, and expressed confidence that India would play a leadership role in the fields of earth and ocean sciences in the coming years.
