PM Modi arrives in Oman on final leg of three-nation visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Oman on Wednesday on the third and final leg of his three-nation visit. He was received at the airport by Oman’s Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs, Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al Said, and was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour.

This is Prime Minister Modi’s second visit to Oman, highlighting the growing depth of the India–Oman strategic partnership. The visit holds special significance as it coincides with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. It also follows Sultan Haitham bin Tariq’s State visit to India in December 2023, reflecting sustained high-level political engagement.

During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to hold comprehensive discussions with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, covering the full spectrum of bilateral relations.

Briefing the media ahead of the visit, Secretary (Consular, Passport and Visa & Overseas Indian Affairs) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Arun Kumar Chatterjee, said the visit underscores the enduring ties between India and Oman, rooted in centuries-old maritime trade and strong people-to-people contacts.

He said the Prime Minister will also address business leaders from both countries at a business forum aimed at strengthening commercial and investment cooperation. In addition, Prime Minister Modi is expected to interact with the Indian community in Oman, acknowledging their contribution to bilateral ties and Oman’s economic development.

India and Oman share a comprehensive strategic partnership, with cooperation spanning energy security, maritime collaboration and regional stability. Oman remains a key partner for India in the Gulf region.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Oman after concluding a two-day State visit to Ethiopia. During the visit, he addressed a joint session of the Ethiopian Parliament, laid a wreath at the Adwa Victory Monument in Addis Ababa and visited the Adwa Museum. He was also conferred Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia’.

Prime Minister Modi held bilateral talks with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali on political cooperation, economic engagement and strategic partnership. In a special gesture, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali personally accompanied Prime Minister Modi to the airport and bid him farewell.

The visit to Oman is expected to further strengthen bilateral relations and give fresh momentum to India–Oman cooperation.
