Medvedev rallies from two sets down to reach Australian Open fourth round

Daniil Medvedev fought back from two sets down to beat Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan 6-7(5), 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3 on Friday, booking his place in the fourth round of the Australian Open after a marathon third-round clash.

The 11th seed was down a break in the third set before turning the match around, earning a crucial break at 5-5 and then winning nine consecutive games to seize control. Medvedev closed out the contest after three hours and 43 minutes, ending world number 47 Marozsan’s resistance.

The victory marked Medvedev’s 18th fourth-round appearance at a Grand Slam. Since making his Australian Open debut in 2017, only Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Rafael Nadal and Jannik Sinner have reached the last 16 more often.

Medvedev, who entered the tournament on an eight-match winning streak after lifting the ATP 250 title in Brisbane earlier this month, said he had focused on staying aggressive as Marozsan dictated play early in the match.

The Russian will next face American Learner Tien, who advanced with a straight-sets win over Portugal’s Nuno Borges. Tien had beaten Medvedev in a five-set encounter at Melbourne Park last year.
