UAE announces major prisoner releases ahead of Ramadan 2026

In a compassionate gesture marking the start of the holy month of Ramadan, the United Arab Emirates’ leadership has ordered the release of thousands of prisoners across the country. UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has directed the release of 1,440 inmates from correctional and penal institutions nationwide.

The President will also cover outstanding financial obligations and fines tied to their sentences, allowing them to begin anew without burdens and reunite with families during this sacred time. This aligns with longstanding UAE tradition of granting clemency on religious occasions to promote forgiveness, social harmony, and rehabilitation.

In Dubai, Vice President and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, as Ruler of Dubai, pardoned 1,856 prisoners from various nationalities in the emirate’s facilities. The move reflects his commitment to family happiness and societal reintegration. Other emirates followed suit: Sharjah’s Ruler pardoned hundreds, Ras Al Khaimah’s Ruler ordered 407 releases with financial settlements, and Ajman’s Ruler approved 134 pardons for good-conduct inmates. Overall, over 3,000 prisoners have benefited from these humanitarian initiatives, embodying the UAE’s values of mercy and community support as Muslims observe fasting, prayer, and reflection this Ramadan.
