Second US Airman rescued after fighter jet shot down over Iran

The United States military completed a combat search and rescue mission in southwestern Iran, recovering a second airman nearly 48 hours after an F-15E Strike Eagle was shot down.

The aircraft went down on Friday, with both crew members ejecting safely. One of them, a weapons systems officer holding the rank of colonel, remained on the ground while evading capture in rugged terrain. President Donald Trump confirmed early today that the second airman had been rescued and was safe, posting, “We got him.” U.S. officials said the operation involved multiple aircraft, rescue helicopters, an HC-130 tanker conducting low-level refuelling, A-10 aircraft providing support, and special forces personnel on the ground. The first crew member was extracted by helicopter shortly after the aircraft was shot down.

Rescue teams reportedly encountered small arms fire during the mission, and some helicopter crew members sustained minor injuries. All personnel involved in the operation returned safely, with no American fatalities reported. Iran had earlier claimed responsibility for downing the aircraft and offered rewards for capturing the crew. Iranian media also released footage said to show the aircraft’s wreckage.

U.S. officials said both airmen were injured but are receiving medical care and are reportedly recovering.
