Centre revises GDP release schedule; annual and Q4 estimates to be announced on June 5

The National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has revised the release schedule for India’s Provisional Estimates (PE) of Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the GDP estimates for the fourth quarter (Q4) of every financial year.

Under the revised schedule, the GDP data, which was earlier released on the last working day of May, will now be published on June 7 every year, or on the previous working day if June 7 falls on a holiday.

The Ministry said the decision was taken after consultations with the Advisory Committee on National Accounts Statistics (ACNAS) with the objective of improving the quality and robustness of national accounts data.

MoSPI said the revision became necessary because several key datasets required for GDP compilation become available only after a lag of nearly two months.

The Ministry noted that listed companies are mandated to file their audited fourth-quarter and annual financial results within 60 days from the end of the financial year, leading many firms to submit financial statements closer to the May 31 deadline.

In addition, important fiscal data related to Central Government accounts – including revenue expenditure, capital expenditure, taxes, subsidies, and interest payments for March – are finalized only after a two-month gap.

As per the revised calendar, the Provisional Estimates of GDP for FY 2025-26 and the GDP estimates for the January-March quarter of 2025-26 will now be released on June 5, 2026.

The Ministry said the move is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the quality, coverage, and reliability of India’s national accounts statistics and aligns the country’s statistical practices with international standards and best practices.
