PM Modi highlights Kerala swimming instructor’s life-saving mission in Mann Ki Baat

Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the inspiring work of Kerala-based swimming instructor Saji Valasheril during the 134th episode of Mann Ki Baat, praising his efforts to teach swimming to thousands of people and promote water safety.

Speaking during the programme, PM Modi shared the story of Saji Valasheril from Aluva, Kerala, who has dedicated himself to teaching swimming as a public service initiative.

“This isn’t a story. This is a true effort,” the Prime Minister said while introducing Valasheril’s work.

PM Modi said the swimming club run by Saji Valasheril has helped more than 15,000 people learn swimming over the years. He also noted that special efforts have been made to train Divyang children, making the initiative more inclusive and accessible.

The Prime Minister said the campaign was born out of a personal sense of responsibility following a tragic incident in which several students lost their lives in a boat accident.

Recalling the motivation behind the initiative, PM Modi said the incident deeply affected Valasheril, who believed that many lives could have been saved if the children had known how to swim.

“A few years ago, several students had died in a boat accident. That incident shook Saji ji deeply. He thought, if the children knew how to swim, perhaps many lives could have been saved -and that’s where his campaign began,” PM Modi said.

The Prime Minister described the initiative as an example of how ordinary citizens can bring meaningful change through dedication and selfless service.

“Service doesn’t require vast resources – what’s needed is a good intent and consistent effort. On the strength of these alone, the lives of thousands can be transformed,” he said.

PM Modi said Valasheril’s work serves as a powerful reminder that individual efforts driven by compassion and commitment can make a significant impact on society, while also contributing to public safety and community welfare.
