Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday met several foreign ministers attending the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola, and Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira.
The meetings took place on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ gathering being hosted in New Delhi under India’s 2026 chairship of the bloc.
PM Modi also joined the visiting ministers and delegates for the official BRICS family photograph, which brought together representatives from member countries and partner nations participating in the high-level diplomatic engagement.
Earlier in the day, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar welcomed the visiting foreign ministers and senior representatives at Bharat Mandapam ahead of the meeting.
EAM Jaishankar welcomed Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Chinese Ambassador to India Xu Feihong, who represented China in place of Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono, South African Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos Hessebon, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar.
EAM Jaishankar also held a bilateral meeting with Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono ahead of the BRICS deliberations.
The BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is part of India’s broader diplomatic engagement with the grouping, which focuses on key global and regional issues, including economic cooperation, multilateral reforms, trade, climate challenges, and development priorities.
New Delhi is hosting the two-day BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting as part of India’s 2026 chairship of the expanded grouping. India assumed the BRICS Chairmanship on January 1, 2026, taking over from Brazil. This marks the fourth time India has held the presidency of BRICS, having previously hosted summits in 2012, 2016, and 2021.
