At least eight people killed after vehicle plunges into well in Maharashtra’s Solapur; President Murmu, PM Modi condole loss of lives

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives.

In a post on X, President Murmu said, “The news of the deaths of people in a vehicle accident in Solapur district of Maharashtra is extremely heartbreaking. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. I pray for the swift recovery of the injured.”

PM Modi announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from the PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased person, while those injured in the accident will receive ₹50,000 each.

In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives in Solapur Rural, Maharashtra, due to a tragic mishap. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

According to preliminary reports, the devotees were returning to their village after visiting the Siddhanath Temple in Mhaswad when the vehicle lost control and fell into a roadside well on the Mhaswad-Pandharpur route.

Soon after the incident, local residents, police personnel and emergency teams launched rescue operations. The District Collector and Superintendent of Police rushed to the spot to oversee relief efforts.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the incident as “extremely tragic and heartbreaking” and expressed condolences to the families of the victims.

“The incident at Tandalwadi in Malshiras taluka of Solapur district, where devotees lost their lives after their vehicle fell into a well on a private farmland, is extremely tragic and heart-wrenching. I pay my heartfelt tributes to them. We share the grief of their families,” he said.

The Chief Minister confirmed that seven people were rescued and were receiving medical treatment. He also announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives in the accident.
