India records over 5 lakh organ donation pledges, reflecting growing public support

India has crossed the landmark figure of 5 lakh organ donation pledges, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to promote voluntary organ and tissue donation and strengthen the transplantation ecosystem.

The achievement reflects growing public awareness and participation in organ donation, with citizens increasingly recognising it as a life-saving act that offers hope and a second chance to patients awaiting transplants. The milestone is also seen as a major step forward in the Government of India’s efforts to encourage informed participation and foster a culture of social responsibility.

Welcoming the achievement, Dr Anil Kumar, Director of the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO), expressed gratitude to citizens across the country for their support of the organ donation movement. He acknowledged the contributions of government and non-government organisations, healthcare professionals, educational institutions, media organisations and other stakeholders who have played a key role in raising awareness and mobilising public participation.

Dr Kumar also appreciated the efforts of state governments and Union Territory administrations for their continued cooperation and commitment in advancing organ donation initiatives across the country.

The government said it remains committed to bridging the gap between the growing demand for organs and tissues and their availability through sustained awareness campaigns, improved institutional capacity and stronger transplantation systems. Efforts are also focused on ensuring that organ transplantation practices remain ethical, equitable, transparent and patient-centric.

The organ donation movement has gained momentum in recent years following repeated appeals by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through his Mann Ki Baat programme. The Prime Minister has consistently highlighted the transformative impact of organ donation and encouraged citizens to support the cause, helping create a broader national movement aimed at saving lives.

A key driver of the initiative has been the Aadhaar-based organ donation pledge registration portal developed under the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization. The platform has simplified the registration process, making it more accessible, secure and transparent, while enabling citizens across the country to pledge organ donation with ease.

Officials said the milestone reflects the success of collaborative efforts undertaken by the government and various stakeholders and represents an important step towards addressing the country’s growing need for organs and tissues for transplantation. The achievement also underscores increasing public trust in India’s organ donation ecosystem and the collective commitment to saving lives through donation.
