Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday expressed grief over the demise of veteran playback singer Suman Kalyanpur.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Anguished by the passing of the popular singer Suman Kalyanpur Ji. Her melodious voice and soulful renditions enriched our cultural world. Through her songs, she created a special place among music lovers and admirers of Indian cinema. Condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
Tributes poured in from across the political spectrum and the music fraternity, with leaders remembering Kalyanpur’s immense contribution to Indian music over a career spanning several decades.
Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari described her death as a great loss to the Indian music world.
“The news of the passing of Padma Bhushan Suman Kalyanpur, the popular, legendary and senior playback singer in the Indian music world, is extremely heartbreaking,” Gadkari said in a post on X.
He noted that Kalyanpur immortalised thousands of songs in Marathi, Hindi and several other languages, leaving behind a rich musical legacy that continues to resonate with generations of listeners.
Gadkari recalled some of her most beloved Marathi songs, including Ketakichya Bani Tithe, Sang Kadhi Kalnar Tula and Nimbonyachya Jhadamaghe, saying they remain popular among music enthusiasts even today.
“Her unparalleled contribution to the Indian music field is immense,” he added, while offering prayers for her departed soul and strength to her family during the difficult time.
Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju also paid tribute to the legendary singer, describing her as a voice that defined an era.
“Deeply saddened by the passing of Suman Kalyanpur, a legendary voice who defined an era. Her melodious voice always touched my heart and soul,” Rijiju said.
He extended his condolences to Kalyanpur’s family and the music fraternity and prayed for peace for the departed soul.
Widely regarded as one of India’s most accomplished playback singers, Suman Kalyanpur captivated audiences with her distinctive voice and timeless songs across multiple Indian languages. Her contributions to Indian cinema and music earned her widespread acclaim and numerous honours, including the Padma Bhushan.
Her passing marks the end of an era in Indian music, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of singers and music lovers.
