US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor on Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister, describing the milestone as a testament to his years of public service and leadership.
In a message, Gor said, “Congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister. This achievement is a powerful testament to his decades of dedicated public service and leadership. Wishing him all the best.”
Prime Minister Modi achieved the milestone on Wednesday after completing 4,399 days in office as an elected Prime Minister, surpassing the record held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
For the purpose of the comparison, Nehru’s tenure is counted from 1952, following India’s first general elections. He had served as head of the interim government from 1947 until the elections were held.
Although former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served in office for more than 14 years, her tenure was not continuous. Modi is now the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister in India’s history. Since first taking office in 2014, he has secured successive mandates in 2019 and 2024, becoming the first Prime Minister since Nehru to win three consecutive terms.
During his tenure, the Modi government has overseen several major infrastructure and development initiatives, including the new Parliament building, the Central Vista redevelopment project, Kartavya Path, Vande Bharat trains, the Statue of Unity, INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link, Noida International Airport, the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), and the Ganga Expressway.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is scheduled to hold a meeting at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Wednesday to mark 12 years of the NDA government at the Centre and celebrate Modi’s latest milestone.
Senior Union ministers, including Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, J.P. Nadda and Shivraj Singh Chouhan, are also expected to attend.
The gathering is likely to review the NDA government’s achievements over the past 12 years and discuss governance priorities, development programmes and the alliance’s future political roadmap, including preparations for upcoming elections.
