‘Yoga is India’s gift to the world’: Russian Embassy official

The Embassy of the Russian Federation in New Delhi on Saturday organised a special yoga session ahead of the 12th International Day of Yoga, highlighting the growing popularity of the ancient Indian practice in Russia.

Speaking to ANI, Yulia Aryaeva, Counsellor (Culture) at the Russian Embassy, said yoga has gained widespread acceptance across Russia, with people in many cities practising it and travelling to India to deepen their understanding of the discipline.

Describing yoga as India’s gift to the world, she said the practice enjoys immense popularity in Russian cities and continues to attract growing interest.

Diana Alipova, spouse of Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov, said yoga promotes harmony of body and mind and acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts in taking the practice to the global stage. She noted that yoga is widely practised in cities such as Moscow and St Petersburg.

Former Minister of State for External Affairs Meenakshi Lekhi, who also participated in the programme, said India and Russia share historic ties and described yoga as a valuable legacy gifted by India to the world. She recalled that promoting yoga globally was among Prime Minister Modi’s priorities soon after assuming office.

The session was conducted by Life Yoga trainer Pragya Singh, who encouraged people to incorporate yoga into their daily lives for physical and mental well-being.

The United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014 following a proposal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the UN General Assembly. Since 2015, India has led global celebrations with support from Indian missions abroad and international organisations.

This year’s International Day of Yoga is being observed under the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing”, highlighting the role of yoga in promoting healthy and active lifestyles across age groups.
