Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday reviewed the prevailing flood situation in the state and assessed ongoing relief and rehabilitation measures at a high-level meeting held at Lok Sewa Bhawan in Guwahati.
The meeting, attended by Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Keshab Mahanta and senior officials from various departments, focused on the flood situation in the worst-affected districts of Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo and Golaghat.
The Chief Minister reviewed the number of people affected, damage to embankments, bridges and roads, and the progress of rescue and relief operations.
Emphasising the need for uninterrupted assistance to affected residents, Sarma directed officials to ensure adequate supplies of rice, pulses, other essential commodities and safe drinking water in flood-hit areas. He said there would be no shortage of funds for relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The Chief Minister also instructed the Health Department to take all necessary preventive measures to avert the outbreak of waterborne and other diseases during the floods and after the waters recede.
Referring to the loss of human lives and livestock in the recent floods, Sarma directed the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department to conduct a comprehensive assessment of livestock losses.
He further asked the Water Resources Department to survey damaged embankments once the flood situation improves and initiate strengthening work on vulnerable stretches. The Public Works Department was directed to begin restoration of flood-damaged roads immediately after floodwaters recede.
To ensure effective implementation of relief measures, the Chief Minister instructed senior officials from various departments to visit the worst-affected districts, supervise the distribution of relief materials and monitor rehabilitation efforts on the ground.
Following the review meeting, Sarma chaired a separate meeting with state ministers to assess the overall flood situation, evaluate the extent of damage and discuss measures for relief, rehabilitation and restoration. He issued necessary directions to ensure a coordinated and effective government response.
