CWG 2026: Team India Turns Attention to Competition as Action Begins

Less than 12 hours after participating in the opening ceremony of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the Indian contingent switched its focus from celebrations to competition as the first full day of sporting action got underway in Glasgow on Friday.

While the colourful opening ceremony marked the formal start of the Games, athletes, coaches and support staff quickly returned to their competition routines, with preparations resuming across training venues, recovery centres and team accommodations.

Coaches finalised competition schedules, physiotherapists supervised recovery sessions, nutritionists monitored personalised meal plans and team managers coordinated logistics to ensure athletes were fully prepared for their events.

Unlike previous editions of major multi-sport events, the Glasgow Games feature a compact format with venues located in close proximity. The use of existing sporting infrastructure has significantly reduced travel time between venues, allowing athletes to devote more time to training, recovery and competition preparation.

The Indian contingent has maintained a focused approach, with athletes and coaches concentrating on technical preparations and competition schedules rather than the ceremonial aspects of the Games.

Supporting the athletes is a multidisciplinary team comprising doctors, physiotherapists, strength and conditioning experts, team managers and logistics personnel, all working to ensure competitors have the necessary support throughout the Games.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) continues to coordinate with National Sports Federations, coaches and organisers to facilitate the smooth participation of the Indian contingent.

The Glasgow Games have also provided valuable insights into the organisation of a major multi-sport event through the use of existing world-class venues, efficient transport systems and athlete-centric planning. These operational practices are expected to offer useful lessons for India, which is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.
