The Centre has strengthened its cyber security framework to tackle the growing threat posed by artificial intelligence-enabled cyberattacks, deploying AI-driven detection systems, expanding vulnerability assessments and enhancing threat intelligence-sharing mechanisms, the government informed Parliament.
Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada said the government has introduced a series of legal, technical and administrative measures to improve cyber resilience and strengthen incident response capabilities against AI-driven threats.
According to the minister, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has deployed AI-based situational awareness systems to detect malicious domains and phishing campaigns, while extending AI-enabled vulnerability assessments of public-facing digital assets in a sandbox environment.
CERT-In also operates an automated cyber threat intelligence exchange platform that shares customised alerts with organisations across sectors to facilitate proactive threat mitigation.
The government said CERT-In conducted 10 cyber security exercises and drills on the theme “Building Resilience against Frontier AI-driven Cyber Threats” during June and July this year. The exercises involved 1,470 participants from 345 government and private organisations across sectors including power, telecom, banking, transport, education, health and space.
The Centre also highlighted its efforts to build cybersecurity expertise through the Certified Security Professional in Artificial Intelligence (CSPAI) programme, launched by CERT-In and SISA in September 2024. The programme aims to equip cybersecurity professionals with the skills to secure AI systems and respond to AI-related threats.
Among other initiatives, CERT-In has issued a series of advisories and technical guidelines over the past three years, including frameworks for AI-assisted vulnerability protection, responsible use of generative AI, defence against deepfakes, AI-assisted cyber risks, software bill of materials, and AI security measures for smart city infrastructure.
The government said these measures are aimed at ensuring an open, safe, trusted and accountable cyberspace amid the rapid evolution of AI-enabled cyber threats.
