Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended greetings to the nation on the occasion of Guru Purnima, paying tribute to India’s Guru-disciple tradition and underscoring the role of teachers in imparting knowledge, values and positive energy.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Heartiest congratulations to all fellow citizens on Guru Purnima. The Guru, along with imparting knowledge, instils positive energy in their disciples, educating them with noble thoughts and refined values. Let us make their ideals the cornerstone of our lives.”
PM Modi also shared a Sanskrit verse describing the significance of a Guru in Indian tradition. Explaining its meaning, he said a Guru provides the right direction, imparts knowledge and truth, guides individuals on the righteous path, educates them and awakens an understanding of life’s truth, thereby paving the way for self-development. “These are regarded as the six forms of a Guru,” he added.
Several senior leaders also conveyed their greetings, highlighting the enduring importance of the Guru in India’s cultural and spiritual heritage.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the Guru occupies the highest place in Indian culture for enriching the lives of disciples with the “nectar-like elixir of knowledge.” In a post on X, he paid tribute to teachers who not only impart knowledge but also build character, contributing to a stronger society and nation.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said Guru Purnima celebrates teachers as architects of values and character, not merely providers of knowledge. He described the Guru-disciple tradition as an invaluable part of India’s cultural consciousness that has guided generations on the path of truth, service, dedication and national duty, and called upon citizens to reaffirm their commitment to serving the nation.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also extended his greetings, describing Gurus as those who dispel the darkness of ignorance through the light of knowledge, values and righteousness. He said that in the Sanatan tradition, the Guru occupies the highest position and inspires disciples towards dharma, wisdom and devotion to the nation.
Guru Purnima is observed on the full moon day (Purnima) in the Hindu month of Ashadha to honour spiritual and academic teachers. The occasion marks the birth anniversary of Maharishi Ved Vyasa, the revered sage credited with compiling the Vedas and authoring the Mahabharata. The festival is celebrated across India with prayers, discourses and ceremonies organised by devotees, educational institutions and spiritual organisations to pay tribute to Gurus.
