The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for several parts of the country, forecasting isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Odisha and intensified monsoon activity across 22 states over the next 60 hours due to the likely formation of a low-pressure area over the North Bay of Bengal.
According to the IMD, the weather system is expected to enhance rainfall and thunderstorm activity over East and Northeast India, East Uttar Pradesh, and the Western Himalayan region during the next seven days.
Parts of Odisha, including Puri, have already witnessed heavy rainfall. The weather department has warned of localised flooding, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and traffic disruptions. Bihar also recorded very heavy rainfall of 12-20 cm during the past 24 hours.
The IMD has also forecast heavy rainfall over Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh during the coming week. An “extremely heavy rainfall” warning has been issued for Meghalaya and parts of West Bengal for the day.
In the Western Himalayan region, Uttarakhand is likely to witness a significant increase in rainfall from July 15, while Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh are expected to experience heavy rainfall later in the week.
The weather office said rainfall activity over the plains of Northwest India and South Peninsular India is expected to remain subdued for now, although monsoon conditions continue in parts of the country, including Mumbai.
The department has advised fishermen not to venture into the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal off the coasts of Gujarat, Odisha, and West Bengal due to squally weather and strong winds reaching 60-80 kmph.
