India, Australia deepen diplomatic engagement through sustained ministerial exchanges

India and Australia have continued to strengthen their bilateral engagement through frequent interactions between their foreign ministers, regular ministerial visits and an expanding network of institutional dialogue mechanisms under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong have maintained regular engagement since Ms. Wong assumed office in May 2022. Dr. Jaishankar congratulated Ms. Wong on her election victory during a telephone conversation on May 21, 2022, following which the two leaders met on the sidelines of the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Tokyo, the ASEAN Ministers’ Meeting in Phnom Penh and during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week in New York, where they also participated in the India-Australia-France and India-Australia-Indonesia trilateral dialogues.

Dr. Jaishankar visited Australia from October 9 to 12, 2022, during which he held the 13th Foreign Ministers’ Framework Dialogue (FMFD) with Ms. Wong. He returned to Australia in February 2023, when he met Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles, and Foreign Minister Wong. During the visit, he delivered the keynote address at the inaugural Raisina@Sydney.

Foreign Minister Wong visited New Delhi from February 28 to March 3, 2023, to participate in the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. The two foreign ministers met again in Sydney in May 2023 during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, and later participated in the second India-Australia-Indonesia Trilateral Dialogue in Jakarta in July 2023. They also held meetings during the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September 2023, followed by a telephone conversation in January 2024.

Dr. Jaishankar visited Perth in February 2024 to participate in the Indian Ocean Conference, where he held bilateral talks with Ms. Wong. The Australian Foreign Minister also spoke to Dr. Jaishankar in June 2024 to congratulate Prime Minister Narendra Modi on securing a third consecutive term in office.

The two ministers met again during the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Tokyo in July 2024. During Dr. Jaishankar’s visit to Australia from November 3 to 7, 2024, he called on Prime Minister Albanese and held meetings with Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles, Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton and members of the Parliamentary Friends of India in Canberra. During the visit, he inaugurated the Consulate General of India in Brisbane and delivered the keynote address at the second Raisina Down Under in Canberra.

Engagement continued in 2025 with meetings between Dr. Jaishankar and Ms. Wong in Washington DC in January and again on the sidelines of the Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in July. The two also joined French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot for the India-Australia-France trilateral meeting in Johannesburg in February. In May, Dr. Jaishankar congratulated Ms. Wong on her reappointment as Australia’s Minister for Foreign Affairs during a telephone conversation.
