Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Tuesday held wide-ranging bilateral talks in Jakarta, reviewing the full spectrum of the India-Indonesia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and signing a series of agreements aimed at expanding cooperation across defence, trade, technology, maritime security, healthcare, education and critical minerals.
PM Modi, who is on a State Visit to Indonesia, was accorded a grand ceremonial welcome at the Istana Merdeka (Presidential Palace), where he was warmly received by President Prabowo Subianto.
Upon his arrival at the Presidential Palace, the Prime Minister signed the visitors’ guestbook. He was accompanied by National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri.
The Prime Minister’s arrival in Indonesia was marked by an escort from Indonesian Air Force fighter jets as his aircraft entered the country’s airspace. In a rare diplomatic gesture, President Prabowo personally received PM Modi at Jakarta’s airport, where he was welcomed with a traditional cultural performance. The meeting marked the first interaction between the two leaders since President Prabowo’s State Visit to India as the Chief Guest at the 76th Republic Day celebrations in January 2025.
The two leaders held talks in both restricted and delegation-level formats, reviewing cooperation across trade and investment, defence and security, maritime collaboration, digital and financial technology, energy, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, space, critical minerals and rare earths, culture, tourism, agriculture and people-to-people exchanges.
During the talks, the leaders welcomed the launch of the Indonesia Open Network (ION), based on India’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) architecture, describing it as a significant step towards strengthening digital commerce cooperation between the two countries.
In a significant cultural initiative, PM Modi announced that India and Indonesia would jointly celebrate 2027 as the “Tagore-Dewantara Year of Cultural and Educational Diplomacy” to commemorate the centenary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s historic visit to Indonesia.
The discussions also covered regional and global developments, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to a free, open, inclusive and rules-based Indo-Pacific. They also discussed ways to further strengthen the ASEAN-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
Highlighting India’s maritime vision, Prime Minister Modi underscored the MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) initiative as a framework for promoting regional security, stability and sustainable development across the Indian Ocean Region.
President Prabowo also conveyed Indonesia’s full support for India’s Presidency of BRICS in 2026.
Following the talks, the two leaders witnessed the exchange of a broad set of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and agreements covering defence cooperation, critical minerals and rare earths, science and technology, education, electoral cooperation, telecommunications, agriculture, maritime security, outer space, steel supply chains, disaster management, medical products regulation and health workforce collaboration.
A Letter of Intent was also exchanged under which India will support the conservation and restoration of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Prambanan Temple Complex in Yogyakarta, reinforcing the shared cultural heritage between the two countries.
President Prabowo later hosted a luncheon in honour of PM Modi. During the engagement, the Prime Minister thanked the Indonesian President for his warm hospitality and extended an invitation to visit India.
