Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tributes to freedom fighters Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak and Chandra Shekhar Azad on their birth anniversaries, praising their contributions to India’s freedom struggle and saying their spirit of nationalism continues to inspire generations.
Born on July 23, 1856, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, popularly known as “Lokmanya”, was a leading nationalist and a key member of the Lal-Bal-Pal trio. He played a pivotal role in India’s independence movement through his advocacy of Swaraj and efforts to mobilise public opinion against British rule.
Chandra Shekhar Azad, born on July 23, 1906, was one of the foremost revolutionaries of the freedom movement. Following the death of Ram Prasad Bismil, he reorganised the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA) and renamed it the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA), strengthening the revolutionary movement against British colonial rule.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Tributes to Lokmanya Tilak on his birth anniversary. A towering figure of India’s freedom struggle, he awakened the spirit of nationalism and inspired generations to dedicate themselves to the service of people.”
The Prime Minister said Tilak’s efforts to promote Indian culture and strengthen the spirit of brotherhood remain equally inspiring. “His writings gave people renewed confidence and furthered a spirit of pride,” he added.
In a separate post, PM Modi paid homage to Chandra Shekhar Azad, describing him as a symbol of fearless courage and unwavering patriotism.
“His fearless courage and unwavering patriotism occupy a proud place in the history of India’s freedom struggle. He motivated countless young Indians to devote themselves to the nation. His resolve continues to inspire generations,” the Prime Minister said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to Tilak, describing him as one of the pioneering leaders of India’s freedom movement who dedicated his life to promoting self-rule, indigenous goods, Indian languages and culture.
Recalling Tilak’s iconic slogan, “Swaraj is my birthright, and I shall have it,” Shah said it awakened the nation’s consciousness and carried the spirit of freedom to every individual.
He also credited Tilak with fostering national awakening through public celebrations such as the Ganesh Festival and the birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, adding that Tilak’s Gita Rahasya continues to inspire people to remain steadfast in their duty.
