The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday unveiled India’s 15-member squad for the two-Test tour of Sri Lanka, with Shubman Gill set to captain the side and KL Rahul serving as his deputy.
Jasprit Bumrah and Sai Sudharsan have been included in the squad, but their availability will be subject to fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE). Washington Sundar, meanwhile, was unavailable for selection for the opening Test.
The biggest talking point from the squad announcement is the maiden India call-up for 33-year-old Madhya Pradesh all-rounder Saransh Jain. The right-arm off-spinner and left-handed batter has been rewarded for his consistent performances in domestic cricket and a strong showing for India A in Sri Lanka.
Jain impressed in the second unofficial Test against Sri Lanka A, claiming six wickets across the match before scoring an unbeaten 70 to help India A register a 10-wicket victory and clinch the two-match series 1-0.
With Sundar unavailable, Jain provides India with an additional off-spin option, along with useful lower-order batting, on pitches expected to assist spin.
The spin attack will be led by Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav, with Manav Suthar and Jain offering further variety. Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar have been named alongside Bumrah in the pace department, while Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel are the two wicketkeeping options.
India will begin preparations for the series with a four-day practice match in Colombo from August 7.
