Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday paid tribute to revolutionary freedom fighter Shaheed Udham Singh on his martyrdom day, describing his life as a symbol of courage and sacrifice that will continue to inspire generations to uphold the nation’s dignity.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Respectful tribute to the great revolutionary martyr Udham Singh on his martyrdom day. His life story, marked by extraordinary courage and valour, will continue to inspire every generation of the country to safeguard the self-respect of the motherland.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid homage to the freedom fighter, saying he bowed in reverence to the immortal martyr on the anniversary of his supreme sacrifice. Shah said Udham Singh’s act of avenging the victims of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by assassinating Michael O’Dwyer in London struck fear into the British colonial administration. He added that Udham Singh also played a significant role in inspiring Indians living abroad through his association with the Ghadar Party.
“The life of martyr Udham Singh Ji, who embraced the gallows with a smile for the sake of India’s independence, stands as an exemplary testament to patience, determination and patriotism,” Shah said.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described Udham Singh’s courage and sacrifice as a glorious chapter in India’s freedom struggle. In a post on X, he said the nation would forever remember the revolutionary’s contribution and continue to draw inspiration from his legacy.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also paid tribute, describing Udham Singh as a symbol of indomitable courage and unparalleled patriotism. She said that by avenging the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, he upheld India’s self-respect and demonstrated the country’s resolve for justice before the world. His spirit of sacrifice and bravery, she added, would continue to inspire the nation.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also remembered the freedom fighter, saying Udham Singh dedicated his life to the service of the motherland. He said the revolutionary’s courage, valour and commitment to India’s freedom would remain a source of inspiration for generations.
Udham Singh is remembered for avenging the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre by assassinating Michael O’Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, in London in 1940. Born on December 26, 1899, in Punjab, he was executed on July 31, 1940, at Pentonville Prison in London for his actions, becoming one of India’s most revered revolutionary martyrs.
