Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Friday paid tribute to India’s weavers and artisans on the occasion of National Handloom Day, describing the country’s handloom tradition as a “living legacy” woven with generations of craftsmanship, resilience and artistry.
In a post on X, the Vice President said India’s handloom heritage reflects the country’s rich cultural traditions while supporting sustainable livelihoods and empowering rural communities.
“India’s handloom tradition is a living legacy, woven with artistry, resilience and generations of craftsmanship. On National Handloom Day, we salute the weavers and artisans whose dedication keeps this priceless heritage alive while creating sustainable livelihoods and empowering rural communities,” he said.
Calling every handwoven product a reflection of India’s cultural richness and the spirit of self-reliance, he urged people to support local artisans by choosing handloom products and strengthening the vision of ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also extended greetings on National Handloom Day, highlighting the sector’s historic association with India’s freedom movement and its contribution to the country’s cultural heritage.
In his message on X, Shah said the handloom sector symbolises India’s rich cultural diversity and noted that National Handloom Day was introduced under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to preserve the craft and promote the weaving tradition.
He said government initiatives, including expanded domestic support and global trade opportunities, are creating new avenues for weavers. Shah also urged citizens to make handloom products a part of their daily lives to strengthen the sector.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also greeted weavers, artisans and the people of the state, describing handloom as a symbol of India’s self-reliance, creativity, skill and cultural identity.
In a post on X, he said adopting Swadeshi products would further strengthen the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat while taking the ‘Vocal for Local’ movement to ‘Local to Global’.
National Handloom Day is observed every year on August 7 to commemorate the launch of the Swadeshi Movement in 1905 and to honour the contribution of India’s handloom weavers and artisans. The day also seeks to promote the handloom sector, encourage the use of indigenous products, preserve traditional craftsmanship and generate sustainable livelihoods in rural areas.
