Lok Sabha adjourned till 2 p.m. amid Opposition uproar

The Lok Sabha was adjourned till 2 p.m. on Wednesday amid continued sloganeering by Opposition members demanding the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and a statement on the police action against NEET protesters on July 20.

Speaker Om Birla repeatedly appealed to the Opposition members to maintain decorum and allow the House to function. However, the sloganeering continued, leading to the adjournment of proceedings.

The Opposition has been demanding a statement from the Home Minister on the issue despite the government’s assurance earlier this week that Amit Shah would respond during a discussion in the House.

On Tuesday, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju accused Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi of using students to promote his agenda. He said the Home Minister was prepared to respond to the issue during a full-fledged discussion, but alleged that the Opposition did not allow the discussion to take place.

Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the National Co-operative Development Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026 through a voice vote amid Opposition sloganeering.

Minister of State for Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol introduced the Bill on behalf of Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah. The legislation seeks to amend the National Co-operative Development Corporation Act, 1962, with the objective of making funding for cooperative societies faster and more flexible.

The Bill also seeks to expand the role of the National Co-operative Development Corporation (NCDC), a statutory body under the Ministry of Cooperation, in financing and promoting cooperative societies across the country.

The Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 was also passed by the Lok Sabha through a voice vote amid protests. The legislation proposes changing the name of the state of Kerala to ‘Keralam’.
