PM Modi announces ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for kin of those killed in Birbhum mishap, ₹50,000 for injured

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased, along with ₹50,000 for those injured in the mishap in Birbhum, West Bengal.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister’s Office shared: “In the wake of the mishap in Birbhum, West Bengal, PM @narendramodi has announced Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 for those injured.”

According to officials, a fire broke out at a hotel adjacent to Tarapith Police Station around 5 am on Monday. The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit, the fire department said.

Birbhum Superintendent of Police (SP) Vidit Raj Bhundesh said at least seven people were killed in the incident. He said no smoke or flames were visible from outside the hotel when police and fire brigade teams reached the spot.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi expressed deep anguish over the loss of lives and said that the local administration is providing all possible assistance to those affected by the mishap.

In a post on X, the PMO shared: “Anguished to hear about the loss of lives due to a fire tragedy in Birbhum, West Bengal. I extend my condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon. The local administration is assisting those affected in the mishap: PM @narendramodi”
