The national flag was hoisted at the Indian High Commission in Canberra on Saturday as part of the ‘Suryapath Tiranga’ initiative, marking India’s 80th Independence Day with a symbolic relay of the Tricolour across the globe.
The initiative seeks to carry the Indian flag from one sunrise to the next, with Indian missions and posts hoisting the Tricolour in succession as daylight moves from east to west.
In a post on X, the Indian High Commission in Canberra said the Tiranga had risen at dawn and handed over the journey to the Indian Embassy in Tokyo.
“Over to Indian Embassy in Tokyo to continue this historic journey of Suryapath Tiranga,” the mission said, urging Indians to spread the spirit of the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign.
The Indian High Commission in New Zealand also hoisted the national flag as part of the initiative and passed the relay to the mission in Canberra.
India is celebrating its 80th Independence Day on Saturday, with celebrations being held across the country and at Indian diplomatic missions abroad.
Union Culture Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat had launched the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga 2026’ initiative on August 9. The campaign will continue until August 17.
He also announced ‘Suryapath Tiranga’ as a flagship initiative under the campaign. Conceived as a symbolic global Tiranga relay, it follows the path of the rising sun, beginning with the easternmost Indian Mission or Post witnessing sunrise and moving westward across the globe.
The initiative seeks to highlight the participation of Indian missions and the global Indian community in the Independence Day celebrations.
The Ministry of Culture has urged citizens to participate in ‘Har Ghar Tiranga 2026’ by hoisting the national flag, learning and singing ‘Vande Mataram’, taking part in community activities and remembering the sacrifices that shaped India’s journey to Independence.
