US President Donald Trump is set to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in New York on Tuesday as Washington pushes efforts to secure de-escalation between Russia and Ukraine.
The meeting is scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where world leaders are gathering for the high-level week. The Russia-Ukraine conflict is expected to remain among the major international issues under discussion during the UNGA.
The talks between Trump and Zelenskyy are expected to focus on steps towards reducing hostilities and efforts to revive negotiations.
Zelenskyy says meeting could change a lot
In a post on X, Zelenskyy said, “I just spoke with President Trump. An important conversation, and we got through a lot. We agreed to meet in New York, and this meeting could change a lot. There is diplomatic momentum.”
He also thanked Trump for the visit to Kyiv by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, saying the two had reviewed key details and seen the situation in Ukraine firsthand.
Zelenskyy said the peace track remains the top priority, with discussions focusing on possible de-escalation measures and fundamental security concerns.
“There are ideas for de-escalation steps and for addressing fundamental security issues – energy security, food security, and the protection of human life,” he said.
Focus on de-escalation and security issues
Zelenskyy said Ukraine was working with the American team and was prepared to take what he described as serious steps towards peace.
He also thanked Trump for signing the Lindsey Graham bill into law.
“We all concur – there must be peace,” Zelenskyy said, while expressing gratitude to those supporting Ukraine and contributing to the diplomatic efforts.
