Tensions between the United States and Iran remain high, with both sides issuing fresh threats to each other, while there are also indications that diplomatic opening might be emerging in the conflict.
Iran’s military has said it has information about US preparations to resume attacks on Iran and has warned that any new US attack would trigger retaliation against American bases and interests across the West Asia region. IRGC said they would attack new targets and deploy new weapons if the US launches further attacks on Iran.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has reportedly warned that Iran would fail economically or face its leadership being wiped out if it didn’t make a deal. However, he also has been reported to saying that he would “probably be open” to meeting Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in New York at the UN General Assembly – indicating that a diplomatic opening might just be emerging in the conflict.
The United States has also issued a fresh travel warning for Iran, urging American citizens not to travel to the country “for any reason” and asking those already there to leave immediately amid rising tensions and the possibility of further escalation across West Asia. The US Virtual Embassy in Iran, in a security alert, said the regional security environment remained complex and warned of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures and other travel disruptions. The US State Department had earlier renewed its travel advisory for the entire region.
The Strait of Hormuz continues to remain a major pressure point. Shipping traffic has fallen sharply, with only around a dozen commodity vessels crossing the strait over the weekend, compared with 35 the previous weekend. While visible traffic through the strait has dwindled to a trickle, producers continue to export oil on tankers travelling with their transponders off.
Oil prices have moved lower again today, with both the Brent crude and US WTI futures dropping about 2%. Brent is still over 100 dollars a barrel, but the fall in prices indicate hopes of some diplomatic opening, despite continued tensions.
In Yemen, Houthis have continued attacks on Saudi Arabia. The group has claimed missile and drone attacks on targets in Riyadh and near Saudi energy facilities. Saudi Arabia has said its air defences intercepted a ballistic missile heading towards Riyadh.
