Industry leaders have called for a stronger and more coordinated approach among industry associations to accelerate India’s electronics and semiconductor ambitions, with greater collaboration across the entire value chain emerging as a key priority.
The issue was discussed during a panel discussion on “Industry Associations Advancing India’s National Agenda” at SEMICON India 2026. The session was moderated by Amitesh Kumar Sinha, CEO, India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), and brought together senior representatives of leading industry associations.
The discussion highlighted the growing interdependence between semiconductors, electronics manufacturing, components, materials, design, packaging and end-use applications. Participants said that the next phase of growth would require stronger linkages between different segments of the ecosystem.
Industry leaders stressed the need for a “whole-of-industry” approach, with individual associations working together on issues that cut across sectors and value chains.
The discussion also focused on the increasing convergence of technology sectors. Participants noted that semiconductor chips derive value through their integration into devices, products and systems, while chip fabrication depends on supporting materials and equipment. Manufacturing also requires capabilities in packaging, testing and electronics.
Against this backdrop, industry representatives discussed the possibility of establishing a more permanent community mechanism to facilitate continuous dialogue, improve coordination among associations and support collective action on issues of national importance.
The proposed mechanism would not replace the specialised role of existing industry associations but would provide a common platform for collaboration, particularly on issues involving multiple segments of the semiconductor and electronics ecosystem.
The discussions also reinforced the broader “Silicon to Systems” vision, under which design, manufacturing, packaging, electronics and technology solutions work together to create a stronger and more resilient ecosystem.
SEMICON India 2026 has brought together more than 600 exhibitors, including nearly 300 international companies, highlighting growing global interest in India’s semiconductor and electronics ecosystem.
The event has also witnessed 56 MoUs, strategic initiatives and industry announcements spanning manufacturing, design, packaging, artificial intelligence, research and development, logistics and skilling.
Government initiatives continue to support the development of the sector. The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and the India Semiconductor Mission are aimed at strengthening domestic capabilities and building a robust manufacturing ecosystem.
According to the release, the Government has approved 12 semiconductor projects under the Semicon India programme, with five commercial semiconductor units already operational as of September 2026.
The developments underline a broader shift in India’s semiconductor strategy, with the focus extending beyond the creation of manufacturing facilities towards building stronger connections across industries, institutions and technologies.
